You know what our building sites are like, scaffolding foresting up the pavement and dripping manky rusty water down below, noise, lorries in and out and half the time with no banksman, sand and mud and bits of brick everywhere, geezers yelling fuckshitkurwa, etc.

Well, Japanese building sites are not like that. Japanese building sites are nice. So nice you're not sure they really ought to bother with the building, the site's a perfect urban element in itself. They're entirely enclosed by relatively immaculate fencing, there are no overhanging bits dropping scaffold clamps and power tools onto passersby, and the ingress/egress procedure is such beautiful choreography: blokes scamper out to stand in front of each lane of traffic with flags and camp winking red or pink wands, then withdraw with a flourishing bow.

The museum wasn't sensational or sentimental. Rather it was matter-of-fact: this is how it was then, in some detail, the scale of it, the way things and people got broken and burnt.

Many of the pictures were familiar, like those in a photo album not opened for a long time. Once, many of us believed it inevitable that something like this should happen to us too. Those images seemed to be everywhere when I was young.

There was a wall, or large partition, entirely papered with dozens of messages. Every time a country tested a nuclear weapon, the mayor of Hiroshima would send a telegram of protest. The detail of the message varied - the state addressed, the particular form of words, the names of successive mayors. Constant, the patient and indefatigable futility of it.
